WITH NEW SIGNBOARDS AND ARTISTIC VISION OF THE BSPB FIELD STATION IN DURANKULAK WE AWAIT THE BEGINNING OF THE FIELD SEASON IN COASTAL DOBRUDZHA
12.10.2012

In early October we installed the new information signs for the "Natura 2000" areas within the scope of the Safe Ground for Redbreasts project – Durankulak Lake, Shabla Lake Complex, Kaliakra and Srebarna. These are attractive and durable panels placed at the most popular approaches to the protected areas and bearing concise information about the rich biodiversity and natural heritage of the region, with focus on the Red-breasted Goose. The aim is to form a caring attitude toward nature and provide local people and visitors with accessible information about the project and the importance of these areas.
The other type of signboards that we installed are part of an information campaign drawing attention to factors such as disturbance, which is a serious conservation concern, and improving the knowledge of fishermen and hunters about the rules of practicing their hobby. As the Red-breasted Goose flocks usually spend the night in the lakes of Shabla and Durankulak, these wetlands are crucial for the species. With their size and topography, they provide safe roosts for the geese. Fishing boats can lead to serious trouble for geese and deprive them of access to water and a place to roost. It is therefore important to improve the knowledge of fishermen and hunters on the biology and conservation status of the Red-breasted Goose.
The artistic vision of the new BSPB field station in Durankulak, whose facade was recently painted by British graffiti artist Faunagraphic, also helps to establish the Red-breasted Goose as emblematic species for the region and a cause for local pride and commitment. The facade attracts the attention and is a joy for the eye of everybody passing on the main road Durankulak - Varna. Hopefully this time again art will play its noble role in favor of the Red-breasted Goose.
