SHABLA HOSTED THE 2ND KITES FESTIVAL DEDICATED TO THE RED-BREASTED GOOSE CONSERVATION
10.10.2012
The event is organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) and is dedicated to the conservation of the globally threatened Red-breasted Goose
Shabla Kite Festival - a colorful, spacy and definitely unusual event in late summer – was held for a second consecutive year on 22 and 23 September 2012 near the oldest lighthouse on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, at the cape of Shabla.
The natural features of the area makes it a favorite wintering spot for endangered Red-breasted Goose, and the beauty of the sloping cliffs and broad meadows with constant breeze are ideal stage for the Festival of kites, dedicated to the conservation of this bird. The event included racing kites, performances of youth theater and music ensembles and artistic formations from the region and abroad. And more: street Graffiti artists from around the country painted their works on huge tanks, old fishing boats and other unusual "canvasses", amidst the unique exterior of the Festival, near the sea and on the background of Shabla lighthouse . Hopefully the artwork of the young artists will stay to remind long of the occasion of the Festival – the emblematic Red-breasted Goose.
The accompanying events during the two days of the festival were also quite diverse - workshops and art studios where kids will be making kites, origami, birds and dolls from natural materials, painting on ceramics, demonstrate techniques for decoration and design graffiti on cardboard and other available materials.
During the two days of the festival there were over 2000 visitors from the country and abroad. Everybody supporting the green idea, loving nature, kite flying, outdoor painting, music, photography, and the great outdoors was welcomed to share this experience with a hint of salty sea breeze in the soft twilight of the receding day.
The festival is part of the «Safe Ground for Redbreasts" project, funded by the EU LIFE + Programme and implemented by BSPB in partnership with WWT, RSPB, Shabla Hunters Association and Kirilovi Ltd Farming Company. The event is organized with the support of the Green Center in the town of Shabla, Bulgarian Federation of Aeromodelling, Amorpha Youth Group, Bulgarian Academy of Photography «Yanka Kyurkchieva", Varna Photographic Society, Mall Varna, and many other friends of ours from Shabla area and nationwide.
